Dr. Petrie Appointed Mosquito Control Chief of Miami-Dade

Dr. Bill Petrie, director of the Mosquito Control and Research Unit (MRCU), is leaving his post to become the head of Miami-Dade Mosquito Control Division in Florida.

He will be responsible for mosquito control in Miami-Dade County, with a particular focus on the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases.

Friendly Aedes aegypti Project Firmly on Track in West Bay

The public health programme to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which transmit Zika, dengue and chikungunya is firmly on track in West Bay.

Recent results from the programme known as the “Friendly Aedes aegypti Project” show the number of wild Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the treatment area is greatly reduced compared to the nearby non-treatment area, which is also being monitored.

Lawyers Contracted for Final Stages of Waste Management Plan

A contract was signed today (Tuesday, 24 January 2017) with a specialist legal team to take forward the plans for the proposed Integrated Solid Waste Management System (ISWMS).

The contract is with law firms Maples and Calder from Grand Cayman and Burges Salmon from the United Kingdom.

Fire Contained in DEH Garbage Truck Load

A fire in a Department of Environmental Health (DEH) garbage collection truck was contained quickly this morning (Tuesday, 24 January 2017) on Commercial Drive in George Town Industrial Estate.

The vehicle's load was observed to be smouldering and threatening to catch fire at around 7.10 a.m. after the truck inadvertently picked up garbage that included hot materials from a commercial bin in the centre of George Town.

Waste Management System One Step Closer

Government is a step closer to resolving the issue of solid waste management in the Cayman Islands with the completion of three reports which are now available to the public.

These are the finalised National Solid Waste Management Strategy for the Cayman Islands (NSWMS), the National Solid Waste Management Strategy Consultation Report (which summarises consultation activities carried out when the draft NSWMS was released last year), and the finalised Landfill Site Environmental Review Report.

Mulch Up for Grabs

Christmas tree mulch will soon be available for collection. The ‘Christmas tree mulch’ is part of the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) recycling programme which aims to reduce the amount of waste entering the George Town landfill by recycling the natural Christmas trees into mulch.

Residents are asked to drop off their natural Christmas trees for mulching by 22 January.
