It will be a busy summer for Cayman’s athletes. As well as competing in the Special Olympic Summer Games, this week (22-23 June) a large delegation will depart for the NatWest Island Games in the Isle of Wight.

With 70-plus team members, athletes will represent the Islands in track and field, golf, table tennis, squash, basketball, swimming, cycling, shooting, tennis and volleyball.

In an on-going good year, Cayman’s swim sensation Brett Fraser has put yet another feather in his cap – this time earning recognition as an Academic All-American.

According to the Florida University website, the two-time NCAA men’s swimming champion was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large Third Team this week, by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

In distributing ‘No Smoking’ signs to local businesses this week, a volunteer group headed by the Public Health Department has literally put the writing on the wall regarding smoking in public places.

The drive sought wider compliance with the Tobacco Law (2008) which requires prominently-displayed ‘No Smoking’ signs to be mounted in all public places. These include beauty salons and barber shops, laundromats, enclosed bars, restaurants and pool halls, as well as shops, shopping centres, restrooms and transportation terminals.

This World No Tobacco Day, Ministry of Health Senior Policy Advisor Joel Francis is celebrating four months of no smoking – a decision that was - and still is - difficult, but certainly one he does not regret.

“I will admit to still getting the occasional craving, but it is a wonderful feeling no longer being bound by an addiction anymore. What’s more, having quit, I now realise just how nasty a habit smoking is,” says Joel.
