Ministry Seeks Public Feedback on Health Care Decisions Bill

The Ministry of Health is seeking feedback from persons on the proposed legislation to facilitate individuals’ wishes surrounding medical care and treatment, including end of life care.

This legislation seeks to provide a structure that will allow persons to make advance health care directives, or ADs. An AD is a document made by a person which expresses their specific wishes for medical care in the event they become mentally incompetent.

Residential Mental Health Facility Planning Approved

Building permit approval now to be sought and construction contract will go out to tender.

Plans for a proposed long-term residential mental health facility in the Cayman Islands have been approved by the Central Planning Authority.

The application was considered and approved by the Central Planning Authority on Wednesday, 7 March 2018.

The Ministry of Health, which is building the facility, will now seek building permit approval and to prequalify eligible contractors in April for construction of the facility.

Input Sought on Tissue Donation and Transplant Regulations

Public input sought for Human Tissue Donation and Transplant Regulations.

The public is being asked for input on regulations being drawn up to govern the Human Tissue Transplant Law so that the legislation can be put into effect.

The law, which was passed in 2013, will allow organ transplants to take place in the Cayman Islands, improving the quality of life for many patients and potentially saving the lives of others.

Residential Mental Health Facility to go to Planning

Plans for a proposed long-term residential mental health facility in the Cayman Islands are to be submitted to the Central Planning Authority this month (December 2017).
Design and construction costs have been drawn up by Toronto-based Montgomery Sisam Architects Inc., which specialises in the design of mental health facilities, in collaboration with the Cayman Islands architectural and design firm DDL Studio.
The mental health facility is to be built on 15 acres off High Rock Road in East End on Crown land already earmarked and approved by Cabinet.

Ministry Staff Help Spruce Up Mission House

The Mission House in Bodden Town was spruced up yesterday morning (Monday, 11 December 2017) by members of the Ministry of Health, Environment, Culture and Housing, who were "giving back" to the community.
The team swapped office attire for yard clothes to spend a couple of hours cleaning, sweeping, working in the garden and carrying out general maintenance at the historic site to get it ready for Christmas.
This was the first project in a new quarterly Ministry initiative in which staff will donate time and effort to a community cause.

Caymanian Student Learns About Mosquitoes as Intern at MRCU

Caymanian student Iain Robertson, who plans to pursue a career in the sciences, spent time recently as an intern at the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU).

Iain (18), a former pupil of Cayman Prep & High School, shadowed research manager Fraser Allen and laboratory technician Zoila Ebanks.

He was the first student to take part in a number of restructured internship opportunities being offered by MRCU.
