Residential Mental Health Facility to go to Planning

Plans for a proposed long-term residential mental health facility in the Cayman Islands are to be submitted to the Central Planning Authority this month (December 2017).
Design and construction costs have been drawn up by Toronto-based Montgomery Sisam Architects Inc., which specialises in the design of mental health facilities, in collaboration with the Cayman Islands architectural and design firm DDL Studio.
The mental health facility is to be built on 15 acres off High Rock Road in East End on Crown land already earmarked and approved by Cabinet.

Ministry Staff Help Spruce Up Mission House

The Mission House in Bodden Town was spruced up yesterday morning (Monday, 11 December 2017) by members of the Ministry of Health, Environment, Culture and Housing, who were "giving back" to the community.
The team swapped office attire for yard clothes to spend a couple of hours cleaning, sweeping, working in the garden and carrying out general maintenance at the historic site to get it ready for Christmas.
This was the first project in a new quarterly Ministry initiative in which staff will donate time and effort to a community cause.

Resistance to antimicrobials has been gradually evolving since the introduction of the first antibiotics, the Penicillins; however, recent times have seen antimicrobials becoming less and less effective, with many everyday infections or diseases being untreatable and causing mortalities.

Caymanian Student Learns About Mosquitoes as Intern at MRCU

Caymanian student Iain Robertson, who plans to pursue a career in the sciences, spent time recently as an intern at the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU).

Iain (18), a former pupil of Cayman Prep & High School, shadowed research manager Fraser Allen and laboratory technician Zoila Ebanks.

He was the first student to take part in a number of restructured internship opportunities being offered by MRCU.

Dart-led Consortium is Preferred Bidder for ISWMS Contract

ISWMS will replace the current landfill in George Town, which is nearing the end of its life.
The new system is expected to process and divert up to 95 per cent of waste from being landfilled in the future. It is to be operated as a public-private partnership, with the successful consortium awarded the contract on a "design, build, finance, operate and maintain" basis.

The 2018 National Heroes Day, one of the largest annual cultural events in the Cayman Islands, will honour contributions in sports.

Minister Seymour Tours Departments

Minister of Health, Environment, Culture and Housing, Hon. Dwayne Seymour, began touring departments within his portfolio last week.

The tour started on Tuesday (11 July 2017) with the Department of Health Regulatory Services, when the Hon. Minister met Director Mervyn Conolly and his staff.

A former board member of the Health Insurance Commission, Minister Seymour told the department's personnel that he looked forward to working with them to ensure that everyone in the Cayman Islands has adequate health insurance coverage.

Temporary Ban on Corned Beef Products from Brazil Lifted

With immediate effect, the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is advising the public that the recent food alert issued concerning the recall of corned beef products from Brazil has been lifted.

A multi-agency committee was set up immediately after the initial food alert to monitor the situation. The committee consisted of representatives from the DEH, the Department of Public Health, Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health.

Healthcare Facilities Urged to Use WHO-approved HIV Test Kits

The Health Services Authority (HSA) has been made aware of three separate incidents of reported “false negative” HIV tests from private healthcare facilities.

The samples subsequently tested positive at the HSA’s lab, with the results also confirmed by the authority’s reference lab, Integrated Regional Laboratories (IRL) in the United States.
