All students entering government or private schools for the first time in Cayman are required to have health screenings. “This must be done before the new school year begins in September,” said School Health Coordinator Nurse Joanna Rose-Wright.

The screening comprises a growth and development assessment, screening for vision and hearing, a dental assessment, a review and administering of necessary immunisations and obtaining personal medical history.

Healthy Nation 2012, the country’s first health risk factor survey, has received more support from the private sector with BAF Insurance Cayman joining as a sponsor.

The health risk factor survey is part of the Ministry of Health’s drive to address the rise in chronic diseases and will gather specific information on health risks such as dietary and exercise habits and alcohol and tobacco usage.

A two-day meeting to discuss and draft the Cayman Islands’ first National Health Policy and Strategic Plan started in Grand Cayman on Thursday, 3 May.

“One of the gaps I identified when I took up office three years ago was the lack of an overarching, guiding policy that outlines our vision, goals and objectives for our health system,” said the Hon. Minister of Health Mark Scotland, JP at the opening of the summit.

With Cayman’s 7th Annual National Nursing Conference (9-11 May) just a week away, nurses and other healthcare professionals are encouraged to register for this premier event.

The conference will focus on sharing best practices in nursing, examining the relevance of nursing in health care delivery and reaffirming nursing’s value and contribution to healthcare.

The Cayman Islands Student Drug Use Survey (CISDUS) 2012 – CYCLE 6
The NDC is currently conducting the Cayman Islands Student Drug Use Survey
(CISDUS). Cycle six (6) is underway with a full census of the public and private
schools grades 7-12.

We urgently need volunteers to assist in this initiative: Twenty volunteers are needed on Tuesday, 1 May 2012 for one hour in the morning session; and fifty volunteers are needed on Wednesday, 2 May for one hour in the morning session.

The Minister of Health the Hon. Mark Scotland, JP, has this morning (Monday, 16 April) declared open the 20th Meeting of Chief Medical Officers. The two-day CARICOM event, held for the first time in the Cayman Islands, will see chief medical officers and other officials from 12 Caribbean territories and countries discuss regional health issues.

During his opening remarks, Minister Scotland said that while the Cayman Islands is not a full CARICOM member, the country has always supported, participated in and benefited from regional health initiatives.
