The Cayman Islands will join the region in observing the annual Caribbean Wellness Day on Saturday, 10 September.

In its fourth year of observance, the theme remains Love that Body, with a sub theme of From Local to Global as countries are encouraged to showcase national and community efforts to promote healthy living and encourage residents to develop good health practices.

The National Drug Council (NDC) recently carried out its second cycle of the Her Majesty’s Prison Survey (Northward, Fairbanks and Eagle House).

The purpose of the survey is to determine programme needs of the prison population as it relates to the delivery of education, treatment, and rehabilitation services for substance abuse.

As researchers of the Darwin Initiative wrap up their second year of field work, the Department of Environment (DOE) gets ready to go public with results from the first comprehensive scientific review of the Islands’ marine park system.

“Halfway through the three-year project, we are well on track and progress has been great. Researchers have conducted dozens of reef surveys looking at fish numbers and sizes, coral cover and species composition,” explained DOE Director Gina Ebanks-Petrie.

With a brand new logo and renewed direction, the National Drug Council (NDC) is looking at strengthen its role in curbing drug abuse in the Cayman Islands with several plans.

“A lot of our work is behind-the-scenes, such as research and policy development. However, one of our most important mandates is preventing drug use. To this end, we have developed a number of new initiatives to address substance abuse in our communities,” NDC Coordinator and Executive Director Joan West-Dacres said.
